[edit] Synchronization

Each caption has the IN and OUT times specifying when it should appear and disappear, respectively. The times can be edited via the two methods below. It is recommended to first enter captions without worrying about their timings, and then use method 1 in the transcript view.

Method 1: using the sync mode. Select the first caption that you want synchronize and press the "Play current caption" button. Then repeat the following steps:

  • When the current caption should appear, click on the captions area (located at bottom of the video) and hold the mouse button.
  • Release the button when the caption should disappear. The current caption will move automatically to the next one.

To watch the result of synchronization, switch off the sync mode (see the checkbox at the top of the page) and play the video.

Method 2: manual synchronization. The second method is to click on the desired time in the captions view and use the arrow keys (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT). If you want to make sure that the time stays in the interval formed by the previous and next time, use CTRL UP and CTRL DOWN commands.

[edit] Formatting (line breaks, etc)

The appearance of captions and transcript can be controlled via the "newline" character (inserted by the ENTER key) as follows:

Captions below the video.   If the caption requires two lines for display then the newline character will be used a guideline on where to break the line.

  • Newlines before or after the caption are ignored.
  • It is strongly recommended to use at most two lines per caption!

Interactive transcript.   Newline characters add the "line break" symbol to the transcript, with one exception: single newline characters in the middle of a caption are ignored. It is recommended to insert newline characters either in the beginning or in the end of the caption.

An alternative is to use paragraph breaks (see the "paragraph break" checkbox in the transcript view). Unlike line breaks, the paragraph breaks have text indentation.

Speakers.   You can specify a speaker for each caption, which will be shown in the transcript. This can be useful if, for example, the video is an interview. To view speakers, select the "show speakers" checkbox in the caption view. It is recommended to use short speaker names (e.g. initials). Entering empty speaker name removes the speaker.
